The Story Behind the Art
Kisii soapstone is one of East Africa’s most celebrated artforms. Mined from the Tabaka Hills of Kenya using shovels, picks, and machetes, each large piece of stone is cut and brought to the workshop where talented artisans carve and finish it by hand. The result is a piece that carries the story of its origin — and the skill of the hands that shaped it.
Because a variety of artisans carve these bookends, expect natural variation in design details and stone color. Each set is one of a kind.
